A Few Tips for Sprucing Up Your Space
In this day and age, you’ll often come across the suggestion that you need to spend a lot of money to transform your living space. The good news is that this couldn’t be further from the truth! You don’t have to rush out to get new furniture or blankets or rugs — or anything else for that matter! Instead, look at what you already have with a fresh set of eyes. We’ll walk you through how you can do that below.
Rearrange Your Furniture
Probably the easiest way to change the way your living space feels is by rearranging your furniture. Now you probably had a vision for what your space should look like when you moved in, and you set your furniture up according to your idea with only a few exceptions.
It’s true that there are often “obvious” places that things should go, but our advice is to try to think outside the box a little bit. For example, if you pushed the couch all the way up against a wall and that’s where it’s lived since you moved in, try to think about if the couch could perhaps split the room up a little differently if it were placed in the center of the space. In other words, think about how you can use your furniture to section off your room into distinct spaces or create natural walkways.
You might be surprised by how much of a difference this can make. Our advice is to just try something and see if you like it or not. After all, it’s a quick and easy thing that you can tackle in no time at all, so we think it’s always worth a try to change your furniture around. If you don’t like it, simply swap it back, but we think you’ll find at least a couple of options that will work much better for your living space.
Change Up Your Art
Like your furniture, you may have had some really specific ideas about what type of art you’d purchase and where it would go in your apartment. Perhaps you had some paintings that your grandma did that you wanted to display. Maybe you’ve had a few pieces that you’ve loved for years that have always gone in your bedroom. Whatever the case may be, there’s no doubt that art can shape a living space more than pretty much anything else.
After you moved in, you arranged everything in a way that made the most sense to you, and that’s where it’s remained.
Now this might sound like a wild idea, but why not switch things up? After all, if you love the art that you’ve decorated your home with, you’ll love it no matter where it is in your space, and changing things up just a little bit can help to make the whole apartment feel fresh. Although the space might not be new to you, the way you feel in it sure can be. If you’ve chosen the apartment-friendly method of hanging your art with velcro strips (which is smart and easy), then moving everything is as simple as removing some velcro, attaching new pieces, and finding your art a new home. It’s simple to do and impossible to mess up, and it can totally transform the way your space feels.
Reorganize Your Cabinets
Although spring isn’t that far in the past and you might already feel like you just did some spring cleaning, why not take the opportunity to clear some things out of your kitchen cabinets and do a bit of rearranging? Whether that means getting rid of the snacks that you don’t want (or that are long expired) or taking everything out and giving the cabinets a good wipe down is entirely up to you.
Another great idea is to reconsider how you use your kitchen space. What we mean by that is that just because you put the plates in one cabinet when you moved in doesn’t mean that they have to say there forever. Take a moment to think about how you can store things more effectively in your kitchen. For example, are things laid out in a way that makes it easy to grab a frying pan and a few ingredients and start cooking or are you moving to three separate spaces in the kitchen? If it’s the latter, think about what you can do to arrange things more efficiently.
